The Rule

PLURAL RULE 4
word + F / FE word + VES

When a noun ends in F or FE, drop the F or FE and add -VES to make it plural.

Exception: If the word ends in a doubled F (ff), just add -S instead — for example, cliff → cliffs, staff → staffs.
