Spelling rules for adding the suffix -ly 1. Just add -ly 2. If a word ends with the letter ‘y’ Change the ‘y’ to an ‘i’ and add ‘ly’ 3. If a word ends with the letters ‘ic’ Don’t add ‘ly’ instead add ‘ally’ 4. If a word ends with the letters ‘le’ Change the ‘le’ to ‘ly’ 5.
