The Spelling Rule

Here are all the spelling rules for adding the suffix ‘ed’ to words. The suffix ‘ed’ will turn a verb into a past tense verb and a noun into and adjective. Spelling Rule 1: It’s easy just add ‘ed’ Rule 2: If a one syllable word ends CVC (consonant vowel consonant) double the last letter and add ‘ed’ (don’t double x, w or y) Rule 3: If it ends in ‘e’ just add the ‘d’ Rule 4: If it ends with a consonant, followed by a y (Rule 4) Change the ‘y’ into an ‘i’ and add ‘ed’ Rule 5: If the final syllable of a (multisyllabic) word isn’t stressed, don’t double any letters add ‘ed’ instead
