The Spelling Rule
The digraph TH can make three sounds: /θ/ Th as in thorn is voiceless, it is made only with air, not your vocal cords. /ð/ Th as in feather is voiced. It is made with vibration of the vocal cords. This is usually used in function words eg this, that, that. A silent E after a TH usually means the TH is voiced. Th can also make the sound /t/ like in the word Thomas. You may think of this as a silent H is in the word. This sound is rare and is usually found in the names of places and people.
