The Spelling Rule

A syllable is a unit of pronunciation containing a vowel and possibly surrounding consonants. The number of times that you hear the sound of a vowel is the number of syllables in a word. Syllables can be used to break a larger word into smaller parts when reading or spelling English words. When spelling longer words, using syllables is a more efficient strategy than using sounds.
