Silent E

Magic E Makes the Short Vowel Long

When a word ends in silent E, that E does not say anything out loud. Instead, it jumps over one consonant to make the vowel before it say its long sound. This is called the VCe pattern (vowel, consonant, silent e). Add E to hat and you get hate. Add E to pin and you get pine. The vowel changes from short to long; the E stays silent.

The VCe pattern has three parts: a vowel, one consonant, and a silent E at the end. The E is silent: you cannot hear it. But it works: it jumps over the consonant and makes the vowel say its long sound (the name of the letter). Hat becomes hate. Pin becomes pine. Hop becomes hope. Cub becomes cube. To check if a word uses VCe, look for a vowel, then exactly one consonant, then an E at the very end.
