SH is a digraph: two letters that make one new sound. S and H on their own say /s/ and /h/, but together they say /sh/, as in ship, shop, fish. SH can appear at the start of a word (shell, shine), in the middle, or at the end (wish, crash). You never split SH when dividing syllables.

The Digraph SH
A digraph is two letters that work together to make a single new sound. When S and H appear next to each other, forget what they say on their own: together they say /sh/. This sound appears at the beginning of many words (ship, shark, shape) and at the end of many words (fish, cash, brush). When you see SH, say it as one smooth sound, not two separate sounds.
