The Spelling Rule
Changing F or FE to VES is English plural rule number 4. To make these nouns plural, we replace the F or FE with VES, such as leaf becoming leaves, knife becoming knives, and wolf becoming wolves. However, not every word that ends in F follows this rule, because some simply add -s, such as roof becoming roofs or chef becoming chefs. A double FF is never dropped to add -VES. When we change F or FE to VES, the meaning changes from singular (one) to plural (more than one). This spelling rule applies to many nouns, but remember there are seven plural rules in total, so keep learning and practicing them all. The rule is taught through a catchy rap song with clear examples to help students remember it easily.
