THE LETTER Y

The letter Y is unusual: it works as both a consonant and a vowel. At the start of a word, Y is a consonant that says /yeh/. In the middle of a word, Y acts as a vowel that says /i/. At the end of a one-syllable word, Y says /eye/ (like the letter I). At the end of a multi-syllable word, Y says /ee/ (like the letter E).

  • End of a one-syllable word: Y is a vowel, making the long /eye/ sound (same as the letter name I): shy, fly, spy, sky, try, dry.

kayak

In kayak, the first Y says /eye/ but the word has two syllables (KAY-ak). The Y is in the middle of the first syllable, acting like a long vowel. Words of Greek or Hebrew origin (like hymn) often have Y-as-vowel patterns that don't follow the standard rule position.

beyond, style

In beyond and style, Y appears in an unexpected position but still acts as a vowel. Beyond = Y between consonants (sounds like /ee/). Style = Y at the end after a consonant cluster (sounds like /eye/). Position rules are a guide, not always exact.

syllable count

The rule for end-Y depends on counting syllables correctly. 1 syllable + final Y = /eye/ (try, dry, fly). 2+ syllables + final Y = /ee/ (happy, funny, silly). Count the beats: FLY has 1 beat; HAP-PY has 2 beats.
