CORE SPELLING RULE

This is one of the most important rules in English spelling: every syllable must contain at least one vowel sound. The vowels are A, E, I, O, U: and sometimes Y. If a syllable doesn't have a vowel sound, it isn't a real syllable. This rule helps you decode and spell any word you encounter.

HOW IT WORKS

No Vowel Sound = Not a Real Syllable

The vowels are A, E, I, O, U: and sometimes Y. Every syllable in every English word must contain at least one vowel sound. This is why:

You can count syllables by counting vowel sounds
Silent letters (like the E in cake) don't count as a new syllable
Vowel teams (like OO, AI, OA) count as one vowel sound, not two
Y acts as a vowel in the middle or end of a word (e.g. gym, fly, happy)

2 syllables, 2 vowel sounds (I, I)

3 syllables, 3 vowel sounds (O, O, U)

When vowels can confuse you

silent E

The E in cake, bike, home is silent: it doesn't make a vowel sound in its own syllable. It does a job (it makes the other vowel long), but it doesn't add a new syllable. Cake has ONE syllable (the A makes the vowel sound), not two.

vowel teams

Two vowel letters together (AI, OA, OO, EE, etc.) usually make ONE vowel sound. Rain = 1 syllable (AI = 1 vowel sound). Boat = 1 syllable (OA = 1 vowel sound). Count vowel sounds, not vowel letters.

rhythm, gym

In rhythm and gym, Y is the vowel. Rhythm has 2 syllables (RHYTH-M) where Y provides the vowel sound in the first syllable, and M forms a syllabic consonant in the second. When in doubt: if you can hear a vowel sound, there is one.
