The Spelling Rule

Traditional spelling rules inherited from Latin prevent native English words from ending in the letters I, U, V & J. If you hear the sound made by one of these letters at the end of the word, very often an alternative spelling pattern is used. Silent final E can be added to I, U and V to prevent them from being at the end of a word. A soft G spelling of DGE or GE is used instead of ending a word with the letter J. Foreign words or words borrowed from other cultures are often an exception to this rule.
