The Spelling Rule

The trigraph or spelling pattern EAR can make four different sounds in the English language. The most common sound it makes is 'ear' as in hear and dear. The other sounds made by EAR are rare. It can sometimes make the 'er' sound, as in Earth and learn. Rarely, it makes the 'air' sound, like in bear and pear. It makes the sound 'ar' only in the base word heart and other words built from that base word such as hearts. This video has Australian Pronunciation with less emphasis placed on the final R of EAR.
