THE /J/ SOUND AT THE END

Native English words never end in the letter J. When you hear the /j/ sound at the end of a word, you spell it DGE (after a short vowel) or GE (after a long vowel or consonant). Judge, lodge, fridge use DGE. Page, cage, huge use GE.

HOW IT WORKS

Native English words never end in J: use DGE or GE

Both DGE and GE spell the /j/ sound at the end of a word. The vowel before it tells you which to use:

Short vowel before /j/: use DGE: badge, fridge, lodge, judge, hedge, nudge. The D bridges the short vowel and the GE. Think of it as the FLOSS-style rule for J: short vowel = extra letter.
Long vowel before /j/: use GE: page, cage, huge, age. The silent E already marks the long vowel, so no D is needed.
Consonant before /j/: use GE: bulge, hinge, plunge, merge. A consonant before the GE ending is enough; no D is added.

loanwords

Words borrowed from other languages CAN end in J: raj, hadj, taj. These are not native English words, so the no-J rule doesn't apply. In everyday English spelling, avoid ending a word with just J.

age / cage

In some short words (like age), the vowel sounds short when you say it quickly but still takes GE, not DGE. That's because the A here is actually a long A spelled with silent E (AG+E). Always ask: is the vowel letter followed by DGE or GE? Not just how it sounds in fast speech.

fudge vs. huge

A good pair to compare: fudge (short U → DGE) vs. huge (long U → GE). Same vowel letter, different length: the vowel length changes the spelling from DGE to GE.
