What Is a Contraction?
A contraction is when two words are joined together by removing one or more letters and replacing them with an apostrophe ('). For example, do not becomes don't — the o is removed and replaced with an apostrophe. Contractions are used all the time in everyday speech and informal writing to make language flow faster. The trick is knowing which letters get dropped and where the apostrophe goes.
